Sialic acids, and the proteins and enzymes which utilise them, are increasingly becoming recognised as playing pivotal roles in a variety of disease states, including microbial infection, inflammation and some cancers. This article reviews aspects of sialic acid biology and chemistry with relation to their biological functions and, in the case of influenza virus infection, details work towards the development of potential therapeutic agents.
