Chitosan-Nanocellulose Composites for Regenerative Medicine Applications

Abstract:


Background: Regenerative medicine represents an emerging multidisciplinary field that brings together engineering principles and life sciences into a unified fundamental understanding of structure-property relationship in micro/nano environment to develop next generation of scaffolds and hydrogels to restore or improve tissue functions. For this purpose, chitosan and cellulosic nanomaterials (CNs) can be uniquely suited, in particular, when they are combined. In this review, we have discussed the chitosan/CNs nanocomposites for regenerative medicine applications.

Methods: By reviewing the most recent literature on the subject, we summarized the details regarding preparation methods, mechanical properties, morphology, cytotoxicity/ biocompatibility of chitosan/CNs nanocomposites particularly for regenerative medicine applications, two focused areas are 1) tissue engineering and 2) wound dressing.

Results: Chitosan/CNs bionanocomposite materials have some unique properties, i.e. biocompatibility, cell adhesion, 3D nanoporous structure, mechanical strength, porosity, etc., which are important for the successful fabrication of a biomedical matrix. They exhibit controlled gas permeability, water absorption, antimicrobial/antifungal activity and wound-healing properties, which are essential for skin tissue engineering and wound dressing. Moreover, the associated biodegradability and compressive strength would be key attributes for the bone tissue engineering application.

Conclusions: The versatile and unique physical, chemical and mechanical properties associated with Chitosan/CNs nanocomposite materials are particularly suited for the development of sustainable and environment friendly matrices for regenerative medicine applications.
